Making Roots

It's been a week since I've written. We moved to Louisville, Kentucky! Both kitties have survived (although they are still driving us crazy as they become acquainted to their new home at 3am each night -- I have to remind myself and hubby about compassion, they are going through the same thing we are). House is adorable and mostly how I remembered it. The neighborhood is quaint, people are friendly and super helpful. Really, life is good. Although it is odd to think just 7 days ago we were sitting in our apartment in DC with views of the capital, noise of the city. It's strange how fast we've laid new roots.

Our cute kitties affectionately referred to as,
 Big Kitty & Little Kitty ~  both with mean eyes in these photos as they were
unhappily locked in the bathroom while the movers were loading our stuff.

Each day I had tons of thoughts I wanted to share with you, but being surrounded by 115 boxes and a mess of a house was driving this perfectionist crazy. Ironically, I found unpacking a bit meditative ~ a quiet space, repetitive action allowing for my mind to slow down and yet at the same time it was full of distractions, memories and planning for the future.

There are many little lessons of life during BIG transitions;

  • Coping with goodbyes
  • Being in the moment ~ Enjoying this space, time and second without anticipating or being agitated the future isn't already here
  • Finding comfort in no routines ~ and being excited about the opportunity to create new routines
  • Realizing it's OK to stop and relax
  • Decisions!!!! We've made more decisions in this last week of owning a home than ever before (except maybe regarding our wedding...but those are completely different types of decisions.)
    • Car - after shopping for 2 days, we were on decision overload and decided to wait a bit, so grateful that our family is lending us one of their cars.
    • Window treatments - Blinds or Shutters, Real wood or Faux wood?
    • Closets - Realizing how when I thought buying a house with no closet organization would be 'easy' to put it - nope...more difficult than I thought (and expensive)
    • Washer/Dryer/Dishwasher - seriously did I mention Decision Overload?

I keep having flashbacks to my parents growing up when they would tell me, "When you get married and have a home you will understand". Well...I do, and I'm sure we are just scratching the surface. It's a journey I'm excited to make with my husband and am super grateful we are closer to family.
Grateful for the beautiful rose-bushes planted around our home, which are still blooming. Sweetness!
My take-a-way from this week:

The experience and memories are in the decisions. They are the nature of life; easy, difficult, fast, slow, lessons...and always there. With each decision we create new roots, we become a bit more stable and strong in our foundation.
