Today was a productive Sunday! I woke up early, reluctantly, to walk 10 miles. I am training to walk a half marathon in early June….and I am actually more than halfway through my training plan (my husband developed for me). I have to admit; I don’t have too lofty of goals. I am not a runner, but wanted to experience a half marathon as well as plan a fun event and bond/be invested in a race with my husband (who runs several half marathons a year …and I didn’t really understand the draw). So, back to my goal….I know I will finish the 13.1 miles, that’s not so much the issue. The issue is finishing before they ‘sweep’ me away! I have 3 ½ hours to walk 13.1 miles. I know..that seems easy right. Well….for some reason I can maintain a 14 minute pace on the treadmill in our gym, but put me out on the street or in a park and I walk so much slower….taking in all of the sights of the city and nature!
This morning I walked past Folger Shakespeare Library and came across this beautiful sculpture, in what I would say is a yoga twist pose! After researching a bit, I learned that it is a statue of Shakespeare’s mischievous sprite Puck who looks merrily toward the U.S. Capitol from above a fountain surrounded by plantings. The inscription below, “Lord, what fooles these mortals be!”, Puck plays his tricks in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
I made it back home just in time to teach a 9:45am yoga class to some friends on the roof of the building we live in. It was the first time I was able to teach on the roof, and the weather could not have been more perfect, delightfully warm with a slight breeze and wonderful view of DC, with the capital and the Washington monument in the background. It was so wonderful to raise our hands to the ‘sky’ and it actually is the SKY that we were gazing at. The experience reminded me of a vacation my husband and I went on to Riviera Maya where a woman taught yoga every morning pool side with the ocean in the background and a gentle warm breeze brushing over us. What an amazing experience and perfect way to start a Sunday! Thank you to my yogi friends for practicing with me today!
