Cultural Experience ~ Hirshhorn Song 1

A few weeks ago I was taking a cab home after a long night at work and we drove past the Smithsonian museums. I happened to glance up (from my twitter feed on my iphone) and saw something beautiful being displayed in bright full color on the side of the Hirshhorn art museum. I immediately had to KNOW what was I missing and how could I have not known about something so creative and artistic happening in my own neighborhood.

Well, DC is a relatively big neighborhood, and I've had my head down in my yoga books and accounting world, I hadn't really paid attention for a few weeks about real life and fun, cultural events I should be soaking up while I live in this grand city.

So...last Friday, my husband and I jaunted over to Hirshhorn (for a date night), and I LOVED it in person. Below are some fun visuals from our experience.

So, what is this all about you ask? It is a 360 degree film projection on the circular Hirshhorn building, created by Doug Aitken. "Viewers become active participants as they walk the perimeter of the building in an attempt to take in the work in it's entirety." ~ Which is exactly what we did as the movie was playing various sound tracks of 'I only have eyes for you' ~ How romantic!

If you are in DC and want to check out the Song 1 experience, it has been extended to May 20th, and also this Friday, May 11th is the highlight of the event with an after-hours event and live performances from No Age, Oneohtrix Point Never, Nicolas Jaar, High Places.

The visual experience is free, and can be seen from the mall and surrounding the building. If we go again, I would bring a blanket and some snacks so we can get comfortable and stay for a while. (and maybe some bug spray depending on the weather). (Note this Friday, there is a $25 fee for the after hours event...but I would presume there are still some locations where you could see the 'screen' for free).

Read more about the event here and here .
